Fees and fee increases for marriage licenses, assumed name applications, plat recordings and open meeting notice postings by county clerk staff were approved by the Smith County Commissioners Court Tuesday.

Effective Oct. 1, the county clerk's office will increase fees for marriage licenses to $72 from $67; assumed name applications to $14 from $9; plat recordings to $31 from $21; and charge a $5 fee for posting open meeting notices for political subdivisions such as emergency services and water districts.

More than 2,000 assumed name applications were filed in 2011. Assumed name applications are filed by people operating a business under a name other than their full legal name.

Almost 1,900 marriage licenses were filed in 2011.

Plat filings average $100 around the state, County Clerk Karen Phillips said. None are as low as Smith County.

There were 273 plats filed in 2011.

Mrs. Phillips said the county will inform the state comptroller and the public of the changes. She said the changes were made to bring the county more in line with other fees across the state and to cover equipment expenditures needed to increase efficiencies.
