A 61-year-old woman was killed this morning when a fire consumed the doublewide mobile home where she lived.

Smith County Fire Marshal Jim Seaton said a neighbor in the 1600 block of County Road 3110 heard loud pops. After looking out a window, she saw the home next to her on fire.

Seaton said Gladewater Fire was the first on the scene about 3:30 a.m. and found the home totally involved in fire.

“They made an attack and did what they could do, but the home was lost,” he said.

Seaton said when they determined the car in the driveway belonged to the couple that lived at the residence, they began looking through the debris.

“The husband was found in Good Shepherd Hospital where he has been undergoing treatment for an unrelated matter. We did however, find her body in the debris,” he said.

Seaton said the woman was found adjacent to a chair in the back bedroom.

Fire departments from Jackson and Winona also worked the fire.

Seaton said the woman, whose identity is not being released at this time, was sent for an autopsy.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.
