High Fashion; secondary students get dressed for fall

It was a simple thing. A blue flower bow hung in Abbey Russell's hair. But that little accessory coupled with a necklace, bracelets and Steve Madden boots created a look that was uniquely hers even if her shirt and skirt were uniform.

It was a simple thing. A blue flower bow hung in Abbey Russell's hair. But that little accessory coupled with a necklace, bracelets and Steve Madden boots created a look that was uniquely hers even if her shirt and skirt were uniform.
“That's like kind of the thing with the uniform,” Miss Russell, 16, an All Saints Episcopal School junior, said by phone. “We all kind of like to do accessories, bows and flowers, bracelets. … We like to spice it up.”
Whether it's an Abbey who has to “spice up” a uniform or a student who has a little more freedom with their clothing choices, options abound for school fashion.

Colored denim is in with bright oranges, greens and purples among the available selection.
The Miss Me brand is popular with its jeans and shirts known for their “bling” and details. Ms. Mustard said most of the Miss Me jeans are school appropriate because they don't have rips in them.

She said the rocker look also is influencing junior clothing this season. The cut of shirts are changing as well.
“It's going from a lot of skin tight to more loose fabric,” she said, “just very flowy and feminine.”

For young men, colored denim also is in, although in more subdued hues than for women.
Denim specialist Caitlyn Grimes said last year skinny jeans were trending for everyone. But this year for men it's the Levi's 501 Original Shrink-to-Fit jeans.
“It's how they were back in the day,” Ms. Grimes said.
She said Trukfit, rapper Lil Wayne's brand, is popular this year with its shirts and hats.

For the head, snapback hats are in and they are an example of “new school meets old school,” Ms. Grimes said.
Although not all students can wear hats on campus, they can be for after-school hours.
For those who don't have a dress code, Ms. Grimes said they might pair an LRG T-shirt with Levi's 501 preshrunk jeans. And they'll match their shoes to the shirt. For a more preppy look, boys will go with a polo-style shirt, khaki pants and Sperry Top-Sider shoes, she said.
