Garrett, Farrar elected to T.B. Butler Publishing Co. Board of Directors

John R. “Bob” Garrett and Newt Farrar have been elected to the T.B. Butler Publishing Co. Board of Directors, company president Nelson Clyde announced this week.

Garrett is president of Fair Oil Company of Texas and a local real estate developer.

Farrar, meanwhile, has a career in private equity investments, primarily in the fields of telecommunications and/or software development. He is a problem solver with a passion to improve performance of individuals, teams and processes.

Garrett is past president of both the Tyler Area Builders Association and the Texas Association of Builders. He currently serves as chairman of the City of Tyler Unified Development Code Committee, serves as vice president of the RW Fair Foundation and is a member of the Development Boards of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler and The Salvation Army. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Southside Bank.

Garrett is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University and in 2007, was appointed to the University's Board of Regents, where he currently serves as chairman. He also earned a Master of Business Administration from The University of Texas at Tyler and was inducted in 2007 as a UT Tyler Distinguished Alumni.

He and his wife, Debbie, are longtime members of Green Acres Baptist Church, and they have five grown children and three grandchildren.

Farrar is an avid pilot, with more than 4,000 flight hours and an Airline Transport Rating for Multi Engine Aircraft. He divides his time assisting aviation-related mission organizations and other commercial business interests. Farrar and his wife, Lorie, are active in faith-based and nonprofit ministries that focus on leadership and development of youth and young adults. The Farrars have an adult son and daughter.

Farrar received his Bachelor of Business Administration in Business Computer Sciences from Texas A&M University. He began his career as a systems analyst for Anderson Consulting and moved to Tyler in 1985, where he co-founded and managed companies in the long-distance telephone and software development businesses prior to data and Internet businesses. He served in senior management positions at Cox Communications, TCA Cable and LDDA Metromedia following the acquisition of former startup companies. Among other tasks, he managed the introduction of high-speed Internet over cable and led a nationwide fiber-optic network expansion across cable markets. Farrar was recently the chief technical officer for EveryCarListed.com, a web-based auto-sales portal now operated by Supermedia.com.
