Federal health officials say 2012 could be a record year for West Nile virus outbreaks.

Below is a breakdown of cases this year in the hardest-hit states, with the number of fatalities in parenthesis.

1. Texas - 336 (14)

2. Mississippi - 59 (1)

3. Louisiana - 52 (6)

4. Oklahoma - 49 (1)

5. South Dakota - 37 (1)
