From the kindergarten student starting their first year in elementary school to the fifth-graders who are top dogs on campus, most young students have some reason to be excited about the new school year even if it means homework is coming.

For some, new clothing has a little to do with the enthusiasm. Getting new or even new-to-you clothes can be enjoyable and add some spice to the otherwise familiar start of school. This year, as every year, certain styles are trending.

Daniel Frey, kids area sales manager at Dillard's, shared some of this year's trends. For girls, bright colors are in. Although bold colors made a statement last year, this year designers have gone a step further with neon greens, pinks and oranges available in clothing.

Girls also can choose from fashions that have made the way down from the juniors department. These include the Miss Me Jeans, Jessica Simpson and GB Girls brands.

Hello Kitty-themed clothing is popular with the younger set and animal print was a common option as well.

For boys, the store is now carrying Under Armour shirts and shorts in sizes 8 to 20 something that age group has been asking for, Frey said.

Other available brands include Ralph Lauren, Hurley, Volcom and Ecko which provide styles for a variety of tastes.

Students who wear basic uniforms such as khaki or navy bottoms with solid-colored tops can purchase those at a variety of local stores.

And for some with more specific uniform requirements or plaids, Academy Uniforms inside Punkin Patch in Tyler serves some local schools.

If you're looking for some back-to-school clothing inspiration, some Tyler area students modeled a few pieces of trending fashion and uniforms in Today's newspaper.
