Tyler police are investigating an apparent racing accident that hospitalized two people early Sunday morning.

Sgt. Paul Robeson said around 1:16 a.m., authorities responded to the 1500 block of Grande Boulevard, where two vehicles wrecked at a sharp curve. He said the two cars, a 2006 Volkswagon Jetta and a 2004 Dodge truck were apparently racing into a curve when both drivers lost control of their vehicles.

The pickup truck rolled and threw the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, out. The truck rolled on top of his legs, pinning him to the ground, Robeson said.

That driver was taken to East Texas Medical Center and was listed in stable condition Sunday afternoon, hospital officials said.

A passenger in the Jetta was also taken to an area hospital as well, though Robeson could not comment on the extent of those injuries.

The driver of the Jetta was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, Robeson said, and charges are expected to be filed against the truck’s driver as well when released from the hospital.

Charges for racing are also a possibility, Robeson said.
