Troup OKs temporary interim superintendent
Troup ISD has a new temporary interim superintendent.
Trustees appointed Dr. Katie Preast, executive director of curriculum and instruction, to the position during a special meeting Tuesday night. She will work at a daily pay rate until a permanent interim superintendent is hired.
Board president Andy Griffin has said Dr. Preast was recommended by outgoing Superintendent Dr. Marvin Beaty.
“She’s doing a very good job for us here,” he said Monday. “We just need somebody to be able to fill in until we are able to hire a permanent interim superintendent. She’s highly thought of here.”
He said Wednesday that board members were in agreement on the direction the district needed to go.
Dr. Preast said via phone that she will work to ensure that things run smoothly until a permanent interim superintendent is in place.
Dr. Preast obtained her bachelors and masters degree from The University of Texas at Tyler in mathematics. Her doctorate is in curriculum and instruction from Texas A&M Commerce.
Before coming to Troup ISD in 2004, she taught mathematics for six years at Bishop T.K. Gorman High School from 1983 to 1989. She taught mathematics at Tyler Junior College from 1989-2004. While at Tyler Junior College, she served as department chairwoman of development mathematics, credit mathematics and managing director of University Studies.
Dr. Preast also has her superintendent’s certification.

Trustees also accepted Beaty’s resignation Tuesday. Beaty was officially hired by Bonham ISD before the special meeting.
“He obviously brings a proven track record. He’s a very impressive person. As a district, we’re extremely excited to have him,” Bonham ISD board president Lance Davis said when Beaty was named lone finalist last month. “We feel like our district has made a lot of progress in the last five years, and we felt like he was the right person at the right time to take us to another level.”
Beaty, 50, has served in Troup for eight years. During his tenure, a day care program was started for teachers and community members, the district’s technology program has seen numerous advances, such as a one-to-one program, which puts laptops in the hands of seventh- through 12th-grade students, and a voter-approved $5.7 million bond allowing the district to make improvements and add classrooms to campuses.
Troup ISD also twice has achieved a state rating of recognized.
Griffin has said the goal now is for the permanent interim to conduct the search for a new superintendent.
The district is expected to hire a permanent interim superintendent in the coming weeks and hopes to have a superintendent in place by March or April.
