Scholarship, nonprofit grant recipients announced

The East Texas Communities Foundation announced the recipients of the 2012 grants through the Edwin A. “Blue” and Janice Owen Miller Charitable Fund, totaling $108,000, according to a written release from the organization.
Grant recipients included ARK Campus Ministry, for matching funds for salaries/intern stipends; Athens ISD Academic Renaissance Organization to provide scholarships for graduating seniors; Athens Samaritans/Labor of Love, for materials and labor for home repairs for aged and disabled; Athens Soup Kitchen, to provide weekly meals for the hungry; the Cain Center, to provide the Henderson County Healthy Initiatives program; Disciples Clinic of Athens, to provide medical and dental care to the working poor; East Texas Food Bank, for Senior Servings weekend meals; East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, for matching funds for inclusive playground; Family Peace Project, for transportation assistance for victims of domestic violence; First Baptist Church of Athens children’s clothing ministry, to provide school uniforms for disadvantaged students and the church’s bedding ministry to provide beds and bedding for families in crisis; Henderson County HELP Center, to expand counseling services for young victims of abuse; Henderson County Performing Arts Center to update 911 school program materials; Meals On Wheels, for preparation and delivery of meals to homebound persons; Methodist Children’s Learning Center, to upgrade security system and purchase curriculum; the Rainbow Room at Henderson County Community Partners, to purchase beds and bedding for abused and neglected children; and Trinity Valley Community College for scholarships for second year students.

The foundation considered 22 applications requesting more than $200,600 in funding.
