Arkansas man dies in 1-vehicle wreck, two others injured
Staff Reports

An Arkansas man died after being thrown from a car outside the Cherokee County town of New Summerfield on Monday morning.

Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Chaney Wade said Michael Griffin, 22, died after being airlifted to East Texas Medical Center about 7 a.m. Monday. He was thrown from the 2003 pickup he was a passenger in, the trooper said.

Wade said the accident, which involved only the truck, is being ruled an accident and appeared to have been a case of driver fatigue.

The driver, identified as Alto resident Lance Elrod, 28, was transported to East Texas Medical Center Jacksonville to be treated for injuries suffered in the accident. He was released the same day, according to hospital officials.

Another passenger, a 16-year-old, also was being treated for injuries suffered in the wreck, but his condition was unavailable.
