Planning is under way for initiatives of the Fit City Challenge Coalition. The group's 5-2-1-0 -- a program pediatricians use in their practices and endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics -- will roll into Tyler ISD schools this fall.

FITY CITY UPDATES
Fit City 5-2-1-0 will be launched in TISD schools in the fall to encourage healthy behaviors.
The initial weigh-in and kickoff event for Lighten Up East Texas will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Bergfeld Park Nov. 3.
Nearby cities have expressed interest in participating in Lighten Up East Texas
A Fit City coalition partner, the Northeast Texas Public Health District, is working to bring the mission of Fit City to neighboring counties through a state grant they recently received.

It emphasizes a daily five servings of fruits and vegetables, two hours or less of screen time, at least one hour of physical activity and zero sweetened beverages.

Dr. Barbara Huggins has met with TISD officials to include the scientific-based program in the physical education program.

Physical education teachers, nurses, and homeroom classes will receive toolkits that promote healthy choices. Students will be notified of the new program, which will be divided into six-week increments, at the beginning of the school year.

Meanwhile, planning for Light Up East Texas, a regional weight loss challenge, continues. Coalition members have moved the date for the initial weigh-in to Nov. 3.

Individuals and teams will sign up and track their weight loss on a website to be developed for the challenge. The contest will culminate next year with an event where participants are entered into drawings for significant gifts.

Some members reiterated the need to promote healthy behaviors instead of solely weight loss. Coalition members are also mulling how to effectively measure success of its initiatives.
