Goodwill Industries of East Texas is doing its part to support students and teachers as the school year draws near.
The nonprofit will again donate 15 percent of all sales during the tax free weekend, Aug. 17-19, to area school districts.
The organization did this for the first time last year.
A minimum of $500 will be donated from each of Goodwill’s 15 East Texas stores. Fourteen school districts, including Tyler ISD, will be supported in the process.
Last year, because of the promotion, Goodwill donated more than $11,000 in all to area school districts including about $3,800 to the Tyler ISD Foundation, which supports the school district.
This year the organization will extend its support directly to teachers as well.
Wednesday through Sunday, teachers with a valid professional ID will receive 20 percent off all clothing at any of Goodwill’s East Texas stores. This includes teachers from the preschool level up to college and university professors.
Marcia Floyd, marketing consultant for Goodwill Industries of East Texas, said the organization decided to add this discount after hearing from teachers last year about how much of their own money they had to use to purchase classroom supplies.
They thought with this promotion they could offset those expenses somewhat, Ms. Floyd said.
Goodwill is in need of donations to ensure well-stocked stores for these back-to-school promotions.
Ms. Floyd said the store could use donations of children’s clothing, belts, shoes and anything else that could be beneficial for the school year.
“Education is a huge part of our mission because Goodwill Industries’ mission is putting people with barriers to employment to work and a huge barrier to employment is a lack of education,” Ms. Floyd said.
She said if the organization can support students and families early on in the educational process that can only bode well for the future.
Goodwill’s Tyler stores are at 407 W. Locust St. and 1817 West Southwest Loop 323. For a complete list of Goodwill’s area locations, visit http://www.goodwilleasttexas.com/.
