Seasonal layoffs affect 500 hourly workers at Trane

Ingersoll Rand Residential Solutions officials said Friday the company is conducting a seasonal layoff at its Trane manufacturing plant that affects 500 hourly production workers.
Workers were notified Friday of the change, Ingersoll Rand Communications Director Maria Weber said in a prepared statement.
“This is a seasonal layoff,” Ms. Weber said. “Our business operates on the demand for our heating, ventilating and air-conditioning products. In Tyler, over many years, we have established a pattern of adjusting our production staff.”
Tom Mullins, president and CEO of the Tyler Economic Development Council for Tyler and Smith County, said the adjustment is an annual event.
“This is a seasonal layoff, it happens between late July and earlier August about this time every year,” he said. “The jobs will be back at the beginning of the new year. It’s a very common thing.”
Trane has 1,300 hourly employees and 400 salaried employees.
In July of last year the company made a similar announcement, indicating 500 people, about a third of its workforce, were being laid off.
Ingersoll acquired Trane in 2008 for about $10.1 billion.
Tyler’s Trane plant creates residential air-conditioning systems and productions.
Ingersoll Rand is a $14 billion global business specializing in commercial, residential and industrial products that enhance air quality, security, efficiency and sustainability, according to its website.
