Flat Tax Would Unfairly Burden Those At Poverty Line, August 1
I would like to reply to a letter from Steve Himes in Friday's East Texas Mailbox, regarding a flat tax rate.
I agree 10 percent is 10 percent but, someone making $10,000 a year and paying $1,000 is really in a financial strain as it is.
A person making $100,000 and paying $10,000 would not miss the $10,000 nearly as much as someone making $ 10,000 a year and paying $1,000 a year.
Many people live on $10,000 a year or less and they are struggling to just get by. That is why we have so many people coming to agencies for assistance.
Everyone does not have the same opportunities in life because of circumstances. They just try to stretch their money as best they can. So I do not think a 10 percent tax would work for those who struggle each day just to exist.
I challenge anyone to try living on $9,000 a year and see how they feel about a 10 percent tax for everyone.
