Morning Telegraph Introduces Product Enhancements For Readability And Expanded Content
From Staff Reports

Today, the Tyler Morning Telegraph debuts several content and design elements intended to expand and enhance information for our readers.

“These new elements are the result of a long-term content evaluation and rethinking of each part of our newspaper,” said Dave Berry, editor of the Tyler Paper. “That effort to re-envision the content and presentation of our news, sports and feature pages is ongoing.

“Some elements were introduced earlier; some are appearing for the first time today. And others will be rolled out later.”

“As always, our main objective is to make reading the paper an enjoyable experience,” Berry said.
Among the more noticeable design enhancements in today's paper are bolder, more dramatic headlines and a slightly larger typeface in the body of news stories. Both are intended to enhance readability.

Brian Pearson, managing editor–news, said contributions to the final product were made by a wide range of staff members.

Among elements introduced in recent weeks are the lighter, more conversational “Page Two” presentations in both News and Sports. “Page Two speaks with a less formal voice than most other pages of the newspaper,” Pearson said. “It's a mix of quick bites of information, polls, reader comments offbeat features and a look at the lighter side of the news.”

Staff-written columns, both from news and sports, have found a home on “Page Two,” They include “For the Record,” a review of classic rock albums, “Dinner and a Movie,” which mixes the talents of Food Editor Christine Gardner and Entertainment Editor Stewart Smith, columns about technology, classic literature, art and the many off-beat topics sports writers like to debate.

“The Go Guide calendar has also undergone a major expansion, with more information than ever before,” said Danny Mogle, managing editor-operations. “The expanded GoGuide in Friday's Marquee tabloid will encompass dozens of listings for live music all across East Texas area and reaching west to Dallas, east to Shreveport and into southern Oklahoma,” he said. “We want Marquee to be the first place people look for entertainment ideas on the weekend.”

The editorial page has a new clean look and will include more interaction with readers through letters and comments gleaned from the best contributions online and on social media. Another addition is the local Sunday editorial cartoon by our own Seames O'Grady.

Throughout the paper, quick-read summaries, information breakouts and other graphic elements will assist readers in getting quickly to the meat of the story.

“We want to hear from you, our readers. If you have ideas about making our product better.” Berry said. “Our efforts over the years have been marked by steady, ongoing improvement – not by one-time adjustments.

“Our staff team fully embraces that concept, and you'll see proof of that in the near future as we announce exciting new print, online and mobile products.”
