Brown Unseats Incumbent Wansley For Sheriff

Wood County residents elected Jim Brown to serve as the county’s sheriff on Tuesday night.
Incumbent Bill Wansley lost the election with 2,918 votes, or 47.63 percent. Brown won with 52.37 percent, or 3,209 votes, according to complete but unofficial results in the Republican runoff election.
Wansley said Tuesday he was unsure what the next step in his law enforcement career would be.
“Somebody’s got to win and somebody’s got to lose,” he said. “Next five months we’ll just do the best we can.”
Wansley had a long career with the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, beginning in the 1980s.
Brown kept his comments short Tuesday as a celebration in his home kicked off with the results.
“It’s been a long, hard campaign, but I want to thank everybody who had a part in it,” he said.
He said the campaign focused heavily on getting drugs out of Wood County, and that’s what he intends to do, starting Jan. 1.
Brown’s experience includes 20 years working with the U.S. Border Patrol, eight years with Immigration and Naturalization Services, experience with the Killeen Police Department, Bell and Travis County Sheriff’s Offices and 10 years as a licensed investigator, according to electjimbrown.org.
There is no Democratic candidate running for sheriff in Wood County.
In the race for the commissioner’s court seat representing Precinct 1, Virgil Junior Holland beat Keith Gilbreath.
Holland won with 57.96 percent, or 1,107 ballots, over Gilbreath’s 42.04 percent, or 803 ballots, according to complete but unofficial results.
