Republican voters in Van Zandt County chose Lindsey Ray by a wide margin Tuesday night to face Democrat Deborah Davis in November’s race for sheriff.

Ray won 62.62 percent of the ballots cast, with a total number of 4,052 votes, according to complete but unofficial numbers.

Incumbent Pat Burnett took 37.38 percent of the vote, with 2,419 ballots cast in his favor.
“I’m excited,” Ray said Tuesday night. “This has certainly been a team effort.”

Ray thanked voters who supported him and the team of people who worked on his campaign.
He said that if he captures the seat in November, he plans to assess the department’s strengths and weaknesses.

Ultimately, he said, his job is service.

“We want to make sure we’re serving the folks of Van Zandt County,” he said.

Burnett, the three-term county sheriff, was unavailable for comment before press time Tuesday.

Ray claims a 25-year career in law enforcement in service with the Mineola Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety. He retired from being a state trooper in November.

Ms. Davis, the Democratic candidate, claims a career in law enforcement spanning 29 years. She has worked for the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office and the Wills Point Police Department in various capacities since 1983, according to her online resume.

In the race to represent Precinct 1 in the commissioner’s court, Brandon Brown will face Democrat O.D. Hazel.

Brown beat Tony Miller with 56.58 percent of the vote, or 980 ballots. Miller took only 43.42 percent, or 752 ballots, in Tuesday’s runoff, according to complete but unofficial results.

The county’s Precinct 3 commissioner race remained close throughout Tuesday evening. Final results pushed Bobby Chaney into the seat, after he won 55.82 percent, or 944 votes. Challenger Ronnie Cavin took 44.18 percent of the ballots, or 747 votes, according to complete but unofficial results.
