Smith leaps ahead of Green in early voting for Smith County sheriff's race
A highly contentious battle for Smith County sheriff is coming to a close tonight as early voting totals show Larry Smith to be way ahead of Chris Green, with all of the votes cast at today's polls still left to count.
Smith had 7,036, or 55.88 percent of the ballots cast, to Green's 44.12 percent, or 5,055 votes. They faced each other in a runoff after no candidate got 50 percent of the vote in this year's primary.
Smith, 54, has 34 years law enforcement experience. He worked 11 years in the Gregg County Criminal Investigation Division, the last eight years as captain of that division, several years with the DEA, and 22 years with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Green, 51, is a retired 20-year game warden.
Sheriff J.B Smith announced he would retire at the end of December after 35 years in office. Because no Democrat ran for the office, the winner of the GOP runoff will take office in January.
