Reader Makes Sheriff Race Runoff Endorsement; July 27
The morning of September 11, 2001, Larry Smith and I were sitting in my home watching the horror on TV as an attack on our country unfolded. Larry’s cell phone was constantly ringing and his orders were, “Be prepared to respond.” He did respond, and for many days thereafter, Larry worked at our Pentagon rescuing, searching, and investigating the most terrible crime scene imaginable.
God forbid that such a horrendous event could or would happen in Smith County. But, if it did, I would want Larry Smith to be my Sheriff, the Chief Law Enforcement officer in our county.
Larry Smith and I have worked numerous criminal cases together, like the “IH-20 Casino Bus High-Jacking.” I was in the Command Post all night with Sheriff J.B. Smith and Deputy Bobby Garmon coordinating the search and investigation. Larry and his fellow officers were instrumental in the investigation, and later Larry Smith’s testimony resulted in the conviction of these killers.
I have lived in Smith County for over 20 years and have been a Commissioned Texas Peace Officer over 43 years. Honesty and veracity are absolutes in law enforcement, and Larry Smith has these qualities.
As a Texas Highway Patrolman for over 33 years, I was not permitted to openly express my political views nor have a campaign sign in my front yard. I now proudly display a sign in my yard and at my ranch endorsing Larry Smith for Smith County Sheriff.
