Suspect In Murder, Kidnapping Caught
A suspect in the murder of a woman and kidnapping of another woman in Coffee City will be brought back to Henderson County in a couple of days to face charges, Henderson County Sheriff Ray Nutt said Saturday.

Jackie Martez Guthrie, 22, was apprehended Friday night in Galveston by Galveston police who found the suspect and the kidnapping victim walking on the beach, Nutt said.

Guthrie was in jail in Galveston Saturday. Henderson County officials traveled to Galveston and brought the kidnapping victim, Tiffany Hurd, 19, back to Henderson County.

She was safe and unharmed, Nutt said.

Guthrie fled with the kidnapping victim after allegedly shooting to death Chantel Barrett, 18, in the vicinity of Brierwood Drive in Coffee City on Thursday night.

"There had been some arguments, some problems the last week or so; what made it come to a head, we don't know," Nutt said.

Guthrie and Ms. Hurd had a relationship and the victim was involved in an altercation and ended up being killed, Nutt said.

A warrant for murder was issued for Guthrie and there was a statewide search. When he is returned to Henderson County, Nutt said, the district attorney will look at the case and determine whether to up the charge to capital murder and whether to add a charge of kidnapping.

Galveston police found the 2001 Ford Crown Victoria that Guthrie had fled in with the kidnapping victim.

The vehicle, which belonged to relatives of the kidnapping victim, was parked a few blocks away from the arrest site.
