Former Apache Belle Awards Full Scholarship To Arlington Sophomore
A Tyler Junior college sophomore from Arlington was named the first recipient of the Mary Payne Lowe Apache Belle Scholarship.
Chara Norman, a health and kinesiology major, accepted the scholarship from Mrs. Lowe last month.
Ms. Norman's future plans include becoming a dance and drill team instructor, according to a TJC news release.
"Chara desires to have the sort of positive influence on young ladies that the Apache Belle organization has promoted in her own life," Apache Belles director Jasilyn Schaefer said, according to a news release.
As an Apache Belle from 1960 to 62, Mrs. Lowe adored her time on the precision dance team, according to the news release.
So, she and her husband, Dick, who live in Westworth Village near Fort Worth, started the scholarship endowment to honor her time on the team.
The endowment exists in perpetuity to fund tuition, fees, books, room and board, and more for a deserving Apache Belle member, according to the news release.
Mrs. Schaefer said it's been a longtime dream to have every Apache Belle on full scholarship and this is a first step.
"Mary has invested in the life of our Apache Belles, and I know Chara will take this opportunity and do great things," Mrs. Schaefer said, according to the news release.
