Tyler Man In Custody Following Foot Chase

A Tyler man was in custody on multiple charges after leading sheriff's deputies on a foot chase Tuesday afternoon.
The 18-year-old is accused of fleeing from deputies who stopped him near the intersection of county roads 46 and 47 near New Harmony for failing to stop at a stop sign, Smith County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Tony Dana said.
The man gave the deputy permission to search his vehicle, and in the process, the deputy discovered drug paraphernalia, brass knuckles and "an illegal knife," Dana said.
"When the deputy gave indication to (the man) that he would be arrested, he was able to break away from the deputy and run away on foot," Dana said Monday.
The suspect led the deputy on a foot chase until a K-9 unit was able to help capture him about half a mile away from the original traffic stop, Dana said.
The 18-year-old is expected to face charges of possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine, he said. Punishment for that offenses ranges from a state-jail felony to a first-degree felony based on the amount recovered, according to the Texas Penal Code.
Dana said he also faces charges of evading arrest, possession of prohibited weapons and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Arraignment had not taken place and bonds had not been set as of Tuesday evening and were not expected until today, according to jail personnel.
