Cake Decorating Event Scheduled For Friday

East Texans will have the chance to experience fun with a side of frosting at the first-ever Cakepalooza sponsored by Cakies Custom Cakery and Desserts.
The event will take place Friday at the Harvey Convention Center from 5 to 10 p.m.
“It’s an opportunity to bring the community together and showcase small businesses and show East Texans what we are all about,” Rachel Huff, owner of Cakies, said. “It’s an event for the whole family.”
The event is centered on a live amateur cake-decorating competition. The competition is open to all amateur decorators. Those wanting to participate have until Thursday to register and pay a fee of $25. The winner of the competition will receive a cash prize of $175.
In addition to the competition, local vendors including Ganache of Tyler, The Luscious Crumb of Mineola and local boutiques will be on hand showcasing their wares.

Children are invited to try out the inflatable tee-ball cage sponsored by Space Walk and participate in a Jr. Cupcake Decorating Contest.
“Anyone can come and participate in the contest, the shopping and other activities,” Ms. Huff said. “Everything is cake-related so there will be plenty of cake.”
While entry into the event is free, VIP passes are offered for children and adults. Adult passes are $25 and are for attendees 13 and up. The pass includes free entry for all raffles and contests, free cake samples from participating VIP vendors and entry into the Live Cake Competition.
Children’s passes are $15 and include raffle tickets, free cake samples from participating VIP vendors, limited entry into games and activities and entry into the Jr. Cupcake Decorating Contest.
Cakepalooza also will raffle off a Classic Stand Mixer from KitchenAid. Raffle tickets are $3 for one ticket or $5 for two tickets.
Proceeds in part will benefit the No Kid Hungry Campaign, which aims to end childhood hunger in America, as well as L.U.V.Endure, a nonprofit ba-ker’s association aiding Tyler nonprofit community programs.
Ms. Huff has always enjoyed desserts and is a fan of television shows such as Cake Boss on TLC. She started Cakies Custom Cakery and Desserts two years ago after taking a cake decorating class at Hobby Lobby.
“I never thought I could actually make them myself until I was staying at home with my kids and began baking out of boredom,” she said. “I fell in love with cake baking and I decided to keep at it after the positive response I got from my family and friends.”
Ms. Huff hopes to make Cakepalooza an annual event for the East Texas area.
“This event is about celebrating cake and giving back,” she said. “This is what I want to do for the rest of my life. Cake makes people happy, and that makes me happy. It’s definitely my passion.”
