Autumn Sage Is Featured Native Plant
The featured native of the Tyler Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas in its Natives Instead of Common Exotics program is Autumn Sage.
It is slightly misnamed, because it blooms from spring until frost with red, pink or white flowers. It is a shrubby perennial 2 or 3 feet tall and wide and loses its leaves in winter.
Native from Central Texas into Mexico, it is drought tolerant and has good deer resistance. Hummingbirds and butterflies flock to it all summer.
Hummingbirds will find it the first day you plant it. Try this easy native. It can be seen at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Nature Center on Bascom Road and is sold at Blue Moon Gardens in Edom and perhaps other nurseries in the area.
