Police: Former Dentist Shot Wife Twice
From Staff Reports

Tyler police continue to investigate the shooting death of 71-year-old Rosiland Nichols for which her husband, a former Tyler dentist, has been arrested.

Police said in a news release Monday that Dr. Bobby Nichols arrived home at his residence at 3417 Allen St. about 5 p.m. Friday and a short time later began arguing with his wife.

"Sometime later, Dr. Bobby Nichols went out to his vehicle to get his gun and went back into the residence. After further argument, he ... shot Rosiland Nichols twice. She died of her injuries," according to the news release.

Neighbors said Saturday they were shocked to learn of the incident.

"It's a tragedy for the entire neighborhood," next-door neighbor Mary Ann Cozby said. "It's a tragedy for the entire Nichols family."

Tyler Police Chief Gary Swindle said Smith County District Attorney Matt Bingham put a hold on the 911 call made by Nichols.

Nichols remains jailed Monday night on a $750,000 bond.
