Residents Have Better Opportunity To Recycle With Bin At Landfill

A local recycling bin is available to Jacksonville residents for the first time in years.
The bin, at the Royal Oaks Landfill, 608 County Road 4102 (Heath Lane), was delivered Wednesday and officially opened Friday morning.
Residents may recycle cardboard, newsprint, aluminum, tin/steel cans and plastics. However, glass, waxed or plastic-coated boxes, and plastic grocery sacks are not recyclable there. Food in cans, laundry, grocery bags, plastic packing material, shelves, toys, buckets and motor oil containers also are not allowed.
"It's to provide a service to the citizens of Jacksonville who are interested in recycling," Jacksonville Public Works director Will Cole said. "If you have a desire to recycle, this makes that a possibility. I think our closest recycling center would probably be Tyler that's available to people, so this gives them a recycle center that's easy to get to and not a long drive."
The city's goal also is to lessen the amount of items dumped at the landfill because it extends the life of the landfill and is economically a good thing to do, he has said.
Cole said residents voiced a desire for recycling, and the city received a $7,200 grant from the East Texas Council of Governments to help fund the bin.
The bin is open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
No charge is associated with the bin, and any Jacksonville resident can use the recycling service.
