A Tyler police officer is recovering from injuries after his patrol car was struck by a juvenile as the officer was finishing a driving while intoxicated arrest.

Tyler police spokesman Don Martin said TJ Goodpasture and another officer had been conducting a DWI arrest on Texas Highway 110 near Grande Boulevard when the accident happened Wednesday night.

Martin said Goodpasture and his female prisoner, who had just been arrested, were in the police cruiser as the officer explained some of the paperwork to the woman.

Martin said the teenage driver drove upon the scene and passed the backup car behind Goodpasture but swerved and sideswiped the car causing significant damage to the cruiser.

Martin said Goodpasture had to be cut from the car by firefighters but added the officer sustained only minor injuries.

Goodpasture and the female he just arrested were taken to East Texas Medical Center where they were treated and released, he said.
