Readers Offer Endorsements In GOP Runoff
Larry Smith is the right man for the Smith County sheriff’s job. No other candidate in the race has the wealth of experience that Larry accumulated over 34-plus years in law enforcement. During that time he worked at the county, state and federal level in a number of different capacities.
I have heard a harrumph or two about him having worked for the feds. There is no doubt in my mind that our central government is out of control in many departments, but Larry’s service was exemplary. He was a servant of the people and helped protect us from people who would do harm to our country. He was not a paper-shuffling bureaucrat, as are so many in the federal government.
James Madison once wisely said, “If men were angels we would need no government.” The primary reasons for having a central government are national defense and free trade among the states. Pushing drugs on our youth, or burning down places of worship is not free trade. Larry was instrumental in helping control these evils, thus strengthening our nation.
He has ample supervisory experience to step into the office without any on-the-job training. If we want a “fresh start” we need someone who can step in on day one and be able to know where to begin, without needing some time to learn the ropes as a leader of the sheriff’s department.
