Halle Berry Honored By Sisters In Christ

Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry will come to Tyler to accept an award from Sisters in Christ, a nonprofit that raises awareness of an issue the actress is passionate about.
"We recognized Halle with the Michelle Johnson Award of Relentless Determination to Overcome," said Michelle Johnson, executive director of the organization. "She speaks out against domestic violence and is a survivor of it herself."
Ms. Berry will be in Tyler for a gala and celebrity golf tournament benefiting the nonprofit on July 14 and 16. The nonprofit still is seeking sponsors for the events, Ms. Johnson said.
The nonprofit announced they chose Ms. Berry for the award at the annual Domestic Violence and Over Comers Awards ceremony last year, but she was out of the country and could not attend, Ms. Johnson said.
The July events are part of a $10 million capital campaign for the nonprofit, Ms. Johnson said.
Part of the hope for the campaign includes funding a project to renovate the Tysen House, 515 E. Erwin St., which needs major repairs.
Sisters in Christ and Dallas-based Global Greenology plan to partner to renovate the house as a shelter for women who are victims of domestic violence to be eco-friendly and off-the-grid, Global Greenology CEO Ken Peterson said. The renovations are estimated to cost $3 million and will be either gold or platinum certified in a measurement for eco-friendly homes, Peterson said.
"It will be a green showplace for not just Tyler but all of Texas," he said. "It will be the first building like it."
