Juneteenth Celebrations Begin Today In Tyler
A series of special activities are planned this week in Tyler to commemorate the annual observation of Juneteenth.

The festivities kick off at 7 p.m. today with the Fourth Annual Gospel Musical at New Life Community Church, 1201 Loop 323 NNW.

A special parade, organized by the 2012 Juneteenth Association of Tyler, kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday, starting at Glenwood Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr., Boulevard, and moving to Woldert Park on 32nd Street near Glass Recreation Center.

The opening ceremony is scheduled to start at noon on stage in the park, followed by an afternoon filled with booths, food, fun and fellowship.

Juneteenth commemorates the 1865 announcement of the ending of slavery.

Although President Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation in September 1862, effective in January 1863, it took about two years before word of the change spread to Texas, records show.
