Retired Educators Donate 1,300 Books To Area School Children
Local retired educators continue to give back to their school communities through the Children’s Book Project.

Members of the Smith County Retired Teachers and School Personnel Association donated more than 1,300 books to children at three area schools.

The local chapter of the Texas Retired Teachers Association donated books to Tyler ISD’s Austin Elementary School as well as Arp Elementary School and Arp Junior High School.

More than 570 books went to students at Austin Elementary, with each child from kindergarten through fifth grade receiving a book plus extra books for the campus.

About 200 students at Arp Junior High received books and more than 530 books were given to Arp Elementary School, according to a statement from the association.

The association considered several factors when selecting schools. These included the number of economically disadvantaged and at-risk students on campus, local library access and lack of previous book donations.

Donated books came from association members along with the Half Price Books Dallas distribution warehouse. The Smith County association collected more than 2,000 books through December, according to the provided information.

Association members cleaned, stamped and sorted the books for distribution. The association also gave donated videos to a Tyler ARC facility. Other books and games were given to the Boys & Girls Clubs of East Texas and will be given to the Literacy Council of Tyler and the Salvation Army.
