Texas State Railroad, Feb. 22
I read the article in the Tyler Paper titled, “Freight Lines Could Help Texas State Railroad Earn Money” on Feb. 17. I am very supportive of developing and rehabilitating the rail line that runs from the Rusk Depot to the Palestine Depot and a further three miles to the Union Pacific Railroad line at Palestine. Currently, the revenues for the Texas State Railroad generated solely from passengers (tourists) have been dismal. Adding the possibility of using that line partially for freight-use is a common-sense answer.

Tourism is seasonal and tourists are fickle; by contrast freight is almost a reliable constant.

I’ve ridden on the Texas State Railroad tour (as a tourist), but returning that section of railroad track to its original practical use of transporting goods and passengers, and earning money at the same time, to keep the Texas State Railroad running seems like a win-win proposition. Do it. All aboard!
