Transportation Bill, Feb. 22
While everyone has been distracted by the tensions between President Barack Obama and the Catholic Church over birth control, Congress has been quietly sneaking through a scheme to impose tolls on existing highways in Texas. We’re talking about roads that are already built, and currently operated from funds generated by the gasoline tax. They are afraid to try to raise the gasoline tax, so they intend to find another way into our pockets. Even worse, these tolls could be collected by private, possibly foreign, corporations. Of course, there would be no corresponding reduction in the gasoline tax — just the imposition of a new tax. This is a horrible idea, and it should be met with outrage.
