Uplifting Article, Feb. 19
ROSES: In response to the article “Organization Mixes Conservation and Capitalism,” by Steve Knight, Jan. 15, it was uplifting to learn about the great strides made in East Texas by The Conservation Fund, a nonprofit so attuned to the importance of pairing economic solutions with environmental goals.

I was particularly interested to learn of the progress being made at the Neches River National Wildlife Refuge — an area that many of us will recall has a storied past as a proposed reservoir site, but now has a future full of potential. The refuge has the potential to protect 38 miles of the Neches River, a priceless natural treasure in East Texas, and provide Texas with increased publicly accessible hunting and fishing lands and waters. It also promises to draw more tourism revenue to the area and provides an opportunity for local landowners within the Refuge’s boundary to conserve their land while realizing their economic goals.

I’m proud to live in a state that recognized the environmental and economic value of our diverse natural resources. I look forward to continued progress at the Neches River National Wildlife Refuge, and with the issue of whether to create a Refuge or not part of our past, hope the community will embrace this new future and possibilities for East Texas.
