Tyler Eatery Closes Its Doors

Wade's Eatery, a recently recreated restaurant in Tyler, has apparently closed, according to a confirmation received from Weingarten Realty, which owns the shopping center on Broadway Avenue where the restaurant was located.

"We can confirm that the Eatery has closed. They have been a long-standing fixture in the community and we were sorry to hear they were closing their doors," Meagan Froehlich, marketing specialist with Weingarten, said in a statement.

An announcement on the restaurant's website stated the owner's regret about the closure. "We regret to announce that Wade's Eatery has been closed," an announcement on the restaurant's website, www.eaterytyler.com, stated Friday. "We thank you for your patronage, and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our customers."

A call to owner Nicole Scudder was not immediately returned.

No signs about the closure were posted on the restaurant, which was shuttered Friday afternoon. Instead, a sign announcing the eatery would be open for Valentine's Day could be seen in the window.

The Eatery opened as a lunch-only restaurant in Bergfeld Center in 1999. The tea room started out as Amy B's Gourmet Eatery, and then changed to The Eatery at Amy B's.

In 2006, Wade Scudder and his wife Nicole Scudder bought The Eatery and quickly extended the restaurant's hours and added breakfast and additional meal options.

The Eatery in Bergfeld Center closed in late May and Wade's Eatery opened in its new, larger space in the Stein Mart shopping center three weeks later. While renovations were being made, they served take out and outside dining only. In September, they officially re-opened the dining room and added breakfast to the menu. On Dec. 1, the Scudders held a party to showcase their newly added dinner menu and unveiled murals painted on the restaurant's walls.

In recent months the Stein Mart shopping center has seen new tenants, including Wade's Eatery, The Scroll Christian Book Store and Family Dollar.

The kitchen in Wade's Eatery was the spot that once housed Culinary Crossroads and Steak Out, and it and another space were combined and renovated to make up the 5,200-square-foot restaurant.

"The business is at now where we should have been over there in Bergfeld Center," Scudder said in December.

But because they were limited to serving take out and outside dining for longer than expected, it has taken them longer to get back on their feet, his wife said at the time.

After relocating, the Scudders went from having 14 employees to 20. Mrs. Scudder ran the restaurant, while her husband worked full-time at Delek Refinery.
