Woman, 18, Recovering After Choking, Stomping Incident
An 18-year old Longview woman is home recuperating today from injuries suffered after she was choked and stomped on in a Tuesday night assault.

On Tuesday, the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a residence on County Road 167D in Kilgore in reference to the alleged assault.

Once deputies arrived on scene, they found the woman lying face down on the floor and short of breath, according to a news release.

The woman, whose name is not being released, spoke to officials before she was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, saying she attended a basketball game in Longview. The suspect, Tate Earnest Nelson, 17, of Longview, asked her for a ride, according to a news release. The victim drove and Nelson gave directions.

As they reached County Road 167D, Nelson asked the woman to pull over so he could use the restroom, which he did, according to a news release. When he got back to the vehicle, Nelson began choking and assaulting her.

“Nelson removed the unconscious victim from the vehicle, and after stomping the victim in the head, Nelson walked away leaving the victim on the ground,” the news release states.

A nearby witness told authorities they were outside when Nelson approached and told them he thought he had killed the victim and needed help to get rid of the body, according to a news release.

The witness declined to help and then noticed the woman crawling up the steps of a nearby residence, according to a news release.

Nelson fled the scene in the woman’s vehicle when he realized she wasn’t dead, the release states. The witness told authorities that before Nelson fled, the woman had made it to the door of the house and the resident called 911.

As Nelson fled the scene, he was unaware the woman’s cell phone, equipped with a GPS tracking, was in the vehicle. A short time later, the GPS tracking indicated that Nelson was traveling westbound on Interstate 20 near Canton.

According to a news release, the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office dispatch then notified the Canton Police Department and Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office with the license plate number and description of the woman’s vehicle.

About 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, Canton Police located the vehicle traveling on I-20 and, after a brief pursuit, law enforcement deployed spikes to stop the vehicle and Nelson was taken into custody. Nelson was in the Van Zandt County Jail today and charged with aggravated robbery with serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony.

Sgt. Viki Penny, with the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office, said officials do not know what prompted the alleged assault.
