Deputy Constable Saves Man's Life
A Smith County deputy constable is credited with saving the life of a man who authorities said tried to kill himself Wednesday.
Precinct 4 Constable John Smith said deputies were dispatched to Peterson Road, just south of the 11300 block of U.S. Highway 271 when a woman reported a man trying to hang himself from a tree.
Precinct 4 Constable John Smith said deputies were dispatched to Peterson Road, just south of the 11300 block of U.S. Highway 271 when a woman reported a man trying to hang himself from a tree.
Deputy Dale Feuquay was the first deputy on scene and, using a knife, cut the rope from which the man was suspended, Smith said.
“(He) basically saved his life,” he said.
The young man, 23, was upset about issues at school, Smith said.
“He gets a second chance at life,” the constable said. “That's the way I look at it.”
The man was taken into a protective custody by deputies, who will monitor him for a period of time to make sure he is not a threat to himself, Smith said. He was treated for injuries from the incident at East Texas Medical Center.
