Tyler Council Acts To Create Homeless Day Resource Center
The Tyler City Council agreed Wednesday to recommend a one-year special use permit and updated zoning to support the creation of a new homeless day resource center.

Officials with Gateway to Hope are working to create a resource center at 601 Valentine St.

Efforts to create the resource center stem from an earlier recommendation from Mayor Barbara Bass' homeless task force, which agreed a well-run resource center can go a long way in helping people help themselves.

City leaders agreed last month to create a Homeless Roundtable to begin work on implementing the task force's recommendations, one of which is the resource center.

Some neighboring property owners raised concerns about safety.

City Planner Heather Nick said the special use permit includes a number of limitations: no overnight stays, loitering, trespassing onto private property, begging, improper use of bus stops or criminal activity.

The one-year permit can be revoked if the rules for operating are violated.
