The fire apparently was started when a plastic bag in contact with an exposed light bulb in a coat closet caught fire, Fire Marshal Paul Findley said. The flames burned in the upper part of the closet, causing some fire damage, he said.
The blaze did not spread into the attic or other parts of the building, though smoke damaged the entire unit.
Residents attempted to extinguish the fire with a hand-held fire extinguisher, but could not douse all the flames, Findley said.
The fire was out by 4:41 p.m.
