Tyler Officer Injured In Crash
By TIM MONZINGO

Staff Writer

A Tyler police officer was treated for minor injuries Sunday morning after a suspected drunken driver crashed into her patrol car.

Officers were dispatched to the accident at the intersection of Front Street and Broadway Avenue about 2:10 a.m., Sgt. Matthew Leigeber said at the scene.

Ten patrol cars, two fire trucks and two ambulances also arrived to clear the accident.

Officer Ayasha Eddins, who was driving patrol unit 1509, was northbound on Broadway when a late-model Nissan pickup, traveling west on Front Street, ran a stoplight and struck her car on the front passenger side, Leiegber said. The truck then veered over and hit a utility pole in front of the Abundant Life building.

“It spun her car all the way around,” he said.

He said the accident happened towards the end of Officer Eddins’ shift and she likely was returning to the station.

Officers administered field sobriety tests to the truck’s driver before taking him into custody on charges of driving while intoxicated.

Officer Eddins was treated for minor injuries and released Sunday.
