US Judge Says He Can't Block Texas Sonogram Law
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A federal judge in Austin says he can't block the Texas law requiring women to have a sonogram before having an abortion.

District Judge Sam Sparks previously ruled parts of the law unconstitutional. His latest ruling Monday said he's bound to follow the direction of the New Orleans-based appeals court, which he says wants the law in place.

The New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights says it will continue to pursue appeals to block the law.

The law requires doctors to show the woman the image of a sonogram, to play the fetal heartbeat aloud and describe the features of the fetus at least 24 hours before an abortion.

There are exceptions in cases of rape, incest, fetal deformity and for women who travel great distances to a doctor.
