Chapel Hill Students Earn Free Computers
About 185 fifth-graders at Kissam Intermediate School in Chapel Hill ISD received free computers through Mustard Seed Ministries “Computers for Kids” program.

The students, who received their hardware last month, had to complete an application, essay and 10 hours of community service to qualify for the computers.

Students were asked to write about the importance of having a personal computer and what they planned to do with theirs once they got one.

Kissam counselor Letta Burger heard about the program in November and facilitated the effort on campus.

Fifth-grade team leader Carol Harris arranged multiple Adopt-A-Highway cleanup days to help provide opportunities for community service.

Of the 233 fifth-graders at Kissam, about 185 completed the process to earn the computers.
Each device came outfitted with a flat-screen monitor, mouse, keyboard, earbuds and software. Each one also is Internet ready and includes standardized test preparation games.

“In a technology-driven world, we can only strive to provide the students at Kissam Intermediate the tools for them to be advanced in the ever-changing society,” school officials said in a prepared statement. “For many of our students, this opportunity has provided them with a learning tool that they could only dream of in the future. This was a wonderful opportunity, and we are so proud of our students and teachers for making this a reality.”
