Keystone Pipeline Would Have Brought Jobs, Feb. 5
The Keystone XL crude oil pipeline would have benefited America in two fundamental ways: created thousands of much-needed jobs and increase domestic energy security.
Today, the United States consumes 15 million barrels of oil a day and imports 10-11 million barrels or close to 70 percent of its needs.
Americans have a fundamental choice to make: get their oil from a secure, stable and friendly neighbor in Canada, or continue to import higher-priced, “conflict oil” shipped in tankers from the Middle East and Venezuela.
The pipeline project would create 20,000 jobs in the U.S. — 13,000 construction jobs — work for pipefitters, welders, electricians, heavy equipment operators and more. And 7,000 manufacturing jobs — from the pipe being manufactured in Arkansas, pump motors made in Ohio and transformers built in Pennsylvania, workers in almost every state in the U.S. would have benefited from Keystone.
Keystone XL has the capacity to deliver 830,000 barrels of oil per day to U.S. refineries in Cushing, Oklahoma and the Gulf of Mexico. This supports the desire in the United States to ultimately achieve domestic energy security.
Pipelines are by far the safest way to move oil and gas and the Keystone would be built with the strongest steel and to higher safety standards than any pipeline in North America.
If the U.S. does not want Canada’s oil, the Chinese are more than willing to buy it. It is a shame for Americans not to receive the benefits of Keystone — the thousands of jobs and a secure, supply of North American oil.
