East Texas Crisis Center Is More Than A Refuge
hen you think of the East Texas Crisis Center, what pops into your mind? Do you think of it only in terms of being a shelter, a fortress or a refuge?
Think again.
It is indeed a place where women and children go to escape abuse, but it is just as much a place for healing and recovery as it is protection.
Do you think of the center as a place that only deals with family violence after it happens?
ETCC is just as much about prevention and advocacy as it is recovery.
Do you think of it only as a place that deals with a problem that happens to others?

The ETCC says one in three women and one in seven men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime and that the abuser is usually someone they know and love.
This month the Crisis Center sponsors the East Texas Auto and Cycle Show as its big fundraiser.
Thousands will see the amazing vintage vehicles on view. The event also provides an opportunity for all of us to think about the organization in a new way.
Here are some of the services and support groups affiliated with East Texas Crisis Center:
H.E.A.R.T Help End Abusive Relationship Tendencies: a confidential support group for battered women.
Advocacy in the form of helping abuse victims obtain protective orders or access crime victims services.
Children’s therapy in which a trained therapist uses play to help children work through the trauma of being abused.
Intervention programs that help men and women obtain coping skills to prevent turning anger into violence against others.
Counseling to help women pick up the pieces after being abused and make decisions about their future relationships and living arrangements.
Education and training that helps women at the shelter obtain job and money management skills.
A speakers’ bureau that addresses groups about ETCC services and victimization.
