Event Benefits Salvation Army
The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary will hold its Ninth Annual Chili Bowl and Auction on Feb. 14.

Sheriff J.B. Smith will again provide his own recipe, cultivated after his years of experience as a judge in the World Championship International Chili Cook-Off in Terlingua, Chick-fil-A will be providing their famous Chicken Noodle Soup for attendees looking for a less-spicy option. Dessert will be provided by Jimmy Lynn of Dakota's Steak and Chop House, and Marsha Swann of Distant Lands Coffee will be serving coffee and tea.

Smith will also be serving as the auctioneer for the event. Members of the Christian Cross Spoke Riders motorcycle group will be assisting in the auction.

“We can depend on these riders every year to help spot bidders in such a large crowd,” said Billie Jenkins, event publicity chair, in a written release.

Item for bid include a one-owner, dark blue, 1995 Cadillac DeVille, two full length fur coats, a white fox jacket, an eleven piece English pink floral chamber set (circa 1893-1900), a State Senate chair with seal, tickets to a Rangers game with parking pass, G. Harvey art, designer handbags, jewelry and more.

Award-winning recording artist, Terry Davis, his band, Old Guys Rule, and granddaughter Lizzy Harris, will be providing the entertainment.

Captain Ben Lawrence of The Salvation Army certainly sees the benefits this event will bring in helping serve those in need in Smith County.

“The Salvation Army would not operate without working together with our community and this chili supper is just another way of raising our standard to meet the needs of hurting people here in Tyler,” said Salvation Army Captain Ben Lawrence in a written release. “With the need for food and shelter at an all time high, we welcome those in need with soup, soap and shelter first, and then provide them with God's word. From the beginning we endeavor to train each individual to go into our community with a job skill.”

The Western-themed event will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Harvey Convention Center. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door, from any Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary member, or at The Salvation Army office at 903-592-4361.
