Police Arrest Man Suspected In Early-Morning Tyler Shooting

Tyler police arrested a man Saturday they believe is responsible for an early morning shooting that injured one.
The suspect in the case, Alejandro Zavala, 42, was arrested and taken to the Smith County Jail on a felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Police Sgt. Paul Robeson said in a statement released shortly afterward.
The suspect's bond is set at $25,000, records show.
Authorities said they were alerted to the shooting around 2:50 a.m. Saturday by East Texas Medical Center officials, who reported a gunshot victim had just arrived in the emergency room.
The victim, Sergio Armando Ayup, 19, reported he had been in a physical altercation at a residence in the 500 block of Valentine St.
“According to the victim, he was shot in the upper chest by someone in the group,” Sgt. Matt Leigeber said in a prepared statement.
The victim was treated for what is believed to be non life-threatening injuries and is currently in stable condition.
The incident remains under investigation.
