Shoppers lined up outside early Thursday morning in anticipation of the reopening of the Goodwill store on Locust Street, and the lines still reached across the store hours later.
"We're amazed by the turnout," store manager Nancy Torreseano said. "We're very grateful for our customers and the opportunity to serve them."
The facility was built in 1987. The changes include a new floor and new paint job. The company's philosophies are painted across the walls, like "not a charity, but a chance."
"They're doing a super job," city councilman Ralph Caraway said. "They've come a long way."
Local artists David Wallace, Velma Owens and Shannon Carter demonstrated how to choose everyday items from the store and create art from them.
In 2010 alone, Goodwill Industries of East Texas diverted more than 1 million pounds of waste from landfills. Information will be available at the store about how to recycle with Goodwill.
Today continues the celebration, with "Mind Your Business Day," featuring a Career Fashion Show. Goodwill's Career and Counseling Services Division will offer resume and interview skill assistance. A drawing will be held for prizes, including a Kindle E-Reader.
Saturday is "Kid's Day," featuring a clown, door prizes and a children's fashion show.
The store will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Saturday.
The Tyler Goodwill Super Store on Loop 323 will close on Saturday for its remodel, and is scheduled to reopen March 5.
