Lake Austin Produces Season’s Third Lunker
It is a wonder the date wasn’t the 13th.

Austin fisherman Brett Ketchum caught a 13-pound bass Sunday on Lake Austin. It was the 13th Toyota ShareLunker to come from the lake.

Ketchum was fishing a jerkbait in 10-feet of water when he caught the bass fishing in the Austin Bass Club of the Deaf tournament. It is the third ShareLunker of the season.

With a mild winter continuing across Texas, water temperature on the lake was 56 degrees.

“She was a very good fighter,” Ketchum said. “Once she jumped, I noticed she was big, but I kept fighting her, and when she got close and I saw her I thought, ‘Oh, it’s big!’ I was nervous because I saw only one treble hook in her, and I knew I could lose her in a second.”

Anyone legally catching a 13-pound or bigger largemouth bass from Texas waters, public or private, between Oct. 1 and April 30 may submit the fish to the Toyota ShareLunker program by calling program manager David Campbell at (903) 681-0550 or paging him at (888) 784-0600 and leaving a phone number including area code.

Fish will be picked up by TPWD personnel within 12 hours.

Anglers entering fish into the Toyota ShareLunker program receive a free replica of their fish, a certificate and ShareLunker clothing and are recognized at a banquet at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens.
