An Overton High School algebra teacher is at home as police investigate her for allegedly assaulting a student.

Captain Clayton Taylor said the victim, a 15-year-old boy, came in Wednesday morning with his parents and reported the assault.

The student alleged that on Monday, his algebra teacher threw a mechanical pencil, and it hit him on the lip.

The pencil left a mark on the boy's lip, but it wasn't noticeable until later on, Overton ISD Superintendent Alan Umholtz said.

"His parents asked what happened, and he brought it to our attention," he said.

The parents have filed assault charges, but police had not made any arrests in the case as of Wednesday afternoon.

An investigation is ongoing.

"We've got to do our investigation," Taylor said. "All the witnesses that were in the classroom, we have to talk with them and find out what they saw and confirm or deny (the allegations)."

Umholtz said the teacher was sent home with pay while the investigation proceeds.

"Our No. 1 goal is student safety," he said. "When we found out a pencil had been thrown, I called her into my office and sent her home."

This is the teacher's first year at Overton High School.
