Lindale Police Chief Don Somes said a family car was stolen from a home in the 300 block of North Henry Street early Wednesday morning.
Shortly after 7:15 a.m., a wrecked vehicle was located at the intersection of Lake Street and Sneed Avenue, Tyler police spokesman Don Martin said. The driver had fled the scene.
A shoplifting call at the Dollar General store on Fifth Street brought 29-year-old Jerry Don Barnett into police custody, Martin said. Barnett, the brother of the stolen car’s owner, is suspected of being the person responsible for stealing and wrecking the car as well, Martin and Somes said.
Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle is a state jail felony, according to the Texas Penal Code, which is punishable by between 180 days and two years in prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000.
